Ghosts’ past. American cast. Kayako’s fast. Save Sarah Michelle Gellar for last.

Director Takashi Shimizu became part of the popular Japanese Horror scene with his work on the Ju-On series. Building off the popularity of J-horror movies like Ringu and Pulse, Shimizu directed 2002’s Ju-On: The Grudge. This film became a horror hit and Hollywood took notice – not only offering to do a remake with American actors, but also to keep Shimizu in the director’s chair for it as well. This is a rarity for remakes and explains why 2004’s The Grudge stands out as the most reverent of the source material for Japanese Horror remakes.

Join the TPM crew as they debate the best Japanese horror movies. After the debate they go house hunting and settle on a nicely haunted podcast studio to discuss 2004’s The Grudge.
